Fishing For Compliments

At left is a picture of my dad's latest fishing trophies, during a recent trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin. (The guy in the picture is not my dad.)

Two weeks ago, when my first article was published in the Indianapolis Star, my dad called me with a puzzling intro to a conversation.

"Hi, Dad, what's going on with you today?"

"Well, your mom's walking around the house looking for my buttons."

"What?"

"When I saw your article, I got so proud, my chest puffed up, and all the buttons popped off my shirt, so your mom's off looking for all of them."

How sweet is that?

Thanks, Dale and FC. If you knew my dad, and what it takes for him to say things like that, you'd be even more touched.

That is immensely sweet. It says a lot about your parents that they are so proud of your accomplishments.

As are we: hitting the Star is a big deal. You have every right to be busting your own buttons, too!

Aw, thanks, Carmi. That means a lot coming from you, a "real" journalist and media dude.

Bella,
Between your mom bringing you the bike and coming to look after you and your dad story, it sounds like you have pretty okay parents.

Chance - yeah, I have to say, though we certainly went through the typical bumpy period when I was a cranky-ass and uncommunicative teenager and as I struggled through my twenties angst, my bond with my parents has only gotten stronger and stronger, and since I took the terrifying leap to Chicago two years ago, these two people have never let me down. I'm pretty damned lucky.
