Pterodactyl Sculpture Mysteriously Appears in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - An unknown artist has transformed a coastal neighborhood into Jurassic Park. A sculpture of a green pterodactyl mysteriously appeared Monday on top of "Ross' Rock," just offshore in the city's Sunset Cliffs neighborhood. The winged dinosaur stands about 10 feet high with a wingspan of about 15 feet. It appears to be made of nylon, plastic pipes and papier mache.

The dinosaur is the latest work to show up on the rock. In August 2004, a Tiki head appeared, and a crab cropped up there in July 2003. Locals said a Christmas tree was put up this year near the holiday season. Others recounted sightings of a toilet, flamingo and other odd objects dating to the '80s.

A neighbor said she spotted six to eight high school-age men erecting the sculpture between 4 and 5 a.m. Monday.
